The learning process. We look at pictures and read (code for ‘research’) taking in information, then we make connections and decisions about how we feel about that information: true. false. stupid. cool. These connections and decisions are based on our own personal experiences, of how we became who we are. It’s as simple as that.
This movement that we are experiencing today, recording your thoughts for public viewing (blogging, social networking, etc.)—I am wondering…is this making us smarter? Are we learning anything from social media? Or are they just entertainment that keeps us distracted & busy?
Most blogs that I follow, or occasionally glance at, seem to have some sort of reference or relationship to the world around them, whether it is re-posting something interesting (article or picture) or an experience at a specific place. Meaning, these blogs aren’t just simply someone’s feelings about having to wake up today & it’s a good day or whatever. Although this may seem completely obvious to some, I am realizing the role they (social media) are playing in my world today. I am gaining value. I am gaining different perspectives about an assortment of topics and they are encouraging me to read more, all while giving me experiences that I will later call upon when making a decision about something or while learning something new.
How are you benefiting from these platforms of personal expression? Are they simply a form of entertainment or are you getting more out of them than you think?
I am benefiting because the blogs and websites that I frequent are encouraging me to continue to read and experiment and to be inspired—I am learning and experiencing new ideas and perspectives.
Here are a few from my list:
